Meet our Seminarian

Mr. Chiedozie F. Ononuju

Home  Parish: Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish, Lewisburg

Class Year: Theology III

Pre-Seminary Education: Loyola Jesuit College, Abuja, Nigeria, Georgetown Preparatory School, Bucknell University

Current Seminary: Mount St. Mary’s Seminary

What did you do prior to entering seminary?
I went into seminary right after I finished my master’s in electrical engineering at Bucknell University. At Bucknell I was a student researcher and I explored creative ways of storing electrical energy.

When did you first think about becoming a priest?
I “played Mass” when I was around five or six, but I first seriously considered the priesthood in senior year of high school.

What influenced your decision to apply for seminary entrance?

I had a lot of help and good advice from wise and caring priests. In particular, my spiritual director at the time—Msgr. Bill Richardson—guided me patiently. But ultimately, it was Christ’s love and his call which I experienced in a very personal and beautiful way that led me to apply to seminary.

Why do you want to be a priest?
I want to be a priest in order to lead souls to Heaven by administering the Sacraments, preaching the Gospel, impacting the lives of families, helping people with spiritual direction, and helping the poor (the materially as well as spiritually poor).

What are your favorite pastimes?
I love watching and playing soccer.

What is your favorite scripture quote?
John 15:5: “Apart from me, you can do nothing.”

What is the last book you read?
Holiness is Always in Season by Pope Benedict XVI. It is actually a collection of reflections and homilies on the saints by the Pope Emeritus.

Who is your favorite Saint and why?
St. Therese of Lisieux is my favorite saint because she played a vital and wonderful role in my vocation journey.

What do you like most about the Diocese of Harrisburg?
I like the fraternal spirit I notice in the priests and seminarians, and the parishioners are very friendly and supportive.

What advice would you give to a young man thinking about the seminary?
Keep on praying with an open heart and trusting in the Lord. God will not put into you a desire that he will not fulfill. And find a good spiritual director to guide you in your discernment.
